CHDC Releases New ATI Documents – USDA Owner/Shipper Records – July – August 2017, For US Horses Imported To Canada

Following the receipt of Access to Information documents regarding horses transported to Canada for slaughter from July 1 to August 31, 2017, a Freedom of Information Act request was made seeking corresponding USDA Owner/Shipper forms.  The FOIA records disclose much more than the Canadian counterpart and include descriptions of each horse, including tag number, colour, breed/type, gender, brands and tattoos.

The majority of horses were identified as Quarter Horse or Standardbred with Paint, Appaloosa, Haflinger, Mule, Belgian, Percheron and pony breeds also listed.

The documents show five consignors transported the forty-three trailer loads of horses to Viande Richelieu Meat Inc., Massueville, Quebec and Bouvry Exports Ltd. in Fort Macleod, AB.

Transporting horses to Viande Richelieu were:

  • Fred E. Bauer, Ohio- 10 loads
  • Jaron Gold, Michigan – 8 loads
  • Rotz Livestock- Bruce, Pennsylvania– 6 loads
  • Mike Edmundson, Missouri– 1 load
  • Pond Hill Ranch, Vermont– 1 load

Horses were transported to Bouvry Exports by:

  • Jack Paluso, Oregon– 2 loads
  • Bar S Feedlot, Montana– 15 loads. The records indicate all horses were marked with the -S brand, registered in Montana to Bouvry Exports. You can read more about the Bar S feedlot in this Animals’ Angels report.

We endeavoured to identify Standardbreds from the tattoo numbers recorded on the USDA forms; if, in error, these horses do not match the tattoo numbers, we apologize to the owners of those horses.

Where tag numbers were visible, we were able to match several Standardbreds with photos from the Access to Information release package.

  1. Good point. I’ll bet many of the horses listed as blind in one eye had been despicably and deliberately blinded in order to force them onto those horrible overcrowded slaughter trucks! Such a horrible business! I wonder how people who send innocent horses to this horrible fate can sleep at night knowing they have betrayed such noble and innocent animals??

This is all so upsetting! All these beautiful horses, many of them race horses with names, shipped long distances in such cramped quarters! I too noticed the high incidence of blind eyes. Can’t wait for this dreadful business to end.

Once again, insanity at it’s best! Plus the word humane is derived from the word human? These innocent 4-legged ones need our support more now than ever! What century is this?? Time to believe & make things right for those who have no voice!!!!

  4. I saw a video last year of a transported that admitted that they would blind a horse that was giving them trouble by sticking their finger in their eyes so the horse would be thinking about their eye instead of the truck. Terrible inhumane treatment. Your list has many horses with a blind eye.
