Marie Dean – Farewell to a great advocate for horses

Marie2The CHDC is deeply saddened to inform everyone that Marie Dean passed away in her sleep in the early hours of Monday, April 20th from complications due to cancer.

The CHDC came to know Marie when we met her at an OSAS horse show several years ago.  Marie stood out right away as a true horse lover and protector.  She was fearless and tenacious in her dedication for our horses and we were most thankful to have her as a supporter and Board member.

Marie doing what she did best

Marie helped spearhead awareness and fund-raising efforts over the years and her enthusiasm for helping horses and all animals was felt by all her knew her.

What a sad day it is for the children, friends, activists and of course her horses. On this side of life we all cry for our loss and will miss the energy/powerful voice for the horses on the other side of life…if you listen carefully you will hear the thunder of hooves as those who were slaughtered gallop to meet the woman who loved them so…black ones, dune, white, grey…old, young, stallions, mares the poor babies that careless humans thought disposable…they will nuzzle her, crowd close…for her soul is one with the horses who have been so brutally killed “for dinner”…ride wild, ride free be at peace …forever in our hearts..and we will not stop fighting for what your fought for Marie…aye yours, Donna POrtree

Kind, passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated to this cause – what a woman! I was so impressed by her. She will be missed.

  4. Such a terrible loss.
When I first began to research horse slaughter I often reached out to CHDC seeking answers to my many questions. Replies from Marie were always so appreciated- I will never forget her kindness and enthusiasm.
    She will be missed.

Sincerest condolences to Marie’s family. The world has lost a true champion horse advocate. 😇🐴

  6. What an amazing woman and how sadly missed she will be. She has left the world of horse lovers hope that their efforts for horses will not be in vain. Awareness, education and her extension of compassion for the plight of the horses shall reach the ears of those in power that can change the situation and issues that cause us great concern and daily heart break for the horses. Thank you Marie, may you be honored for your valuable contributions and may your precious horses,be your chariot to a place of peace where you are free with those that you fought so hard for. RIP Marie Dean.

  7. so shocked to hear this–only knowing Marie online with the common interest in helping horses, she stood out as a true heart, fighting 24/7 with determination and compassion, and was always available to help or answer questions, until ill health interrupted and she was forced to take time for herself. I thought about her often and waited for her to return–so saddened to learn of her passing. Now I am fighting a similar battle– hoping to beat the odds, as I am sure Marie also hoped. If I fail I can take comfort knowing I will be joining spirits like Marie on the other side, and we beacon a light for the horses from there– the good
work is not done once we leave this world.

It is especially a sad day when horses lose another individual whom stands up and fights to end slaughter. While her voice maybe now silent, those of us still here will have to speak up even louder. We continue this fight for her and the love we all share of horses. RIP Marie.

Marie is an amazing woman and I was honoured to get to know her. Marie introduced me to a vegetarian lifestyle, educated me on the horse slaughter industry and took me to my first protest. It was a privilege to be welcomed into her home and become a part of her life. I will miss her smile and her amazing laugh but most of all her passion for compassion. Run fast and free Marie
