Equine Therapy Programs Continue To Offer Second Careers For Horses

Horse facilitated programs to aid persons with PTSD and other physical or mental health initiatives are on the increase. The people and groups that offer these services are proving that horses can utilize a second career without being considered “useless” after their first career is over. Support is provided to participants using the interaction with horses to increase  self-awareness, learn effective communication skills and manage conflict.

rcmpCALGARY- Every day, police officers put their lives on the line, but in recent years more officers are dying by suicide that at the hands of criminals. More than 30 RCMP officers have died by suicide since 2006.

That has prompted an equine therapy program in Alberta to expand to include RCMP officers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.

racehorse_therapy.jpg.size.xxlarge.promoThe HOPE pilot project was launched in October by WEG, Halton Regional Police Service’s COMMANDE (Community, Mobilization and Engagement), and LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society. The therapeutic horsemanship program brings together retired racehorses with vulnerable citizens from various communities. Men and women groom, tack and walk horses while also learning basic horse behaviour and anatomy.

Symphony of Fire and half-dozen other retired racehorses live at Danielle Goncalves’ Emerald Lane Farm in Thornton, a foster home for LongRun.

  2. so many horses are sold for meat that could rally help some one to be a person again, I thank you for saving these wonderful animals who are making a difference to humans, so we should be very humane to them, save the horses, do not send them to slaughter, they have a place on this earth and different jobs to do …..
