Canadian Conservative MP Maxime Bernier, who voted to keep horse slaughter going with a nay vote in May of this year on Bill C-571, took part in the Quebec festival of pig wrestling (Rodeo de cochons) during the MPs’ summer recess.
The Montreal SPCA spoke against the cruelty in a campaign in July, As did hockey legend and animal advocate, Georges Laraque, in a Facebook campaign, saying that the festival “terrorizes pigs and wild boars.” With regard to these events, the Montreal SPCA stated “subjects pigs to unnecessary stress and suffering for the pure purpose of so called “entertainment.”
Clearly, animal abuse is not a high priority with some of our Canadian Ministers of Parliament. Hon. Maxime Bernier, not a stranger to controversy while in the Harper government, is Canada’s current Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism and Agriculture).
