Letter from The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health

In May of 2010, The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Member of Parliament for Edmonton – Spruce Grove and current Minister of Health,  expressed concern about the consumption of horsemeat in a letter to a Director with the CHDC.

Please feel free to use this letter to promote discussion with your own MP or to include with correspondence to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The CFIA is now managed by the federal Ministry of Health.

  1. We still need to do all the talking and keep the interest up, maybe with some help, we can shut down the horrible slaughter houses , stop the killing and pray for it to never rear it’s ugly head again. Still praying

    Good news. Fingers crossed!!

  3. As the Health Minister, they make the ‘major’ decisions as I believe CFIA is only the inspection agency. I believe CFIA is limited in authority much like the United States FSIS and APHIS. FSIS only has jursidiction if horses enter a US slaughter facility and APHIS only has jurisdiction of the CSHTA. I believe the criteria that they have jurisidiction over is determined by the Health departments. I believe they will all point fingers to the veterinarians that are educated and have to endorse an animal into the slaughter systems however again – by the criteria established by the Health departments. Thanks for sharing….

This just might be the best news I have heard coming out of Canada. If this lady is against horse slaughter there may be a lot more like her that are in the position to help to shut it down. It sounds like she likes horses and don’t want to see them slaughtered. Then knowing too how dangerous the Vet drugs that all horses are given is to humans that eat horse meat is. Shut the killing down in Canada will knock the bottom out of the kill buyers businesses in the US. It might push the US Senate to pass the two bills gathering dust in committee that would put a stop to US horses ending up in the slaughter pipeline.
