I took this off of a commentary regarding the listeria deaths in Ontario a few years back “By now everyone has heard the story. Gerry Ritz, failed ostrich farmer and Agriculture Minister joked that the listeriosis crisis originating at Maple Leaf Foods was “death by a thousand cold cuts”. He further bleated that he hoped a reported case in PEI was Liberal ag critic Wayne Easter. Ritz made the remarks on a conference call with an assortment of ministerial office people and bureaucrats from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and other departments. The Globe item reported that Canada has the lowest standards among the United States and European Union countries governing how much exposure consumers can safely have to listeria. Eighteen Canadians have died and another 30 are seriously ill across the country.” How sad that our Minister of Agriculture has this kind of attitude towards people dying due to lax standards. The only way to battle the PC government is through elections!!

  2. Simply consider the source of such dis honesty and stupidity. It is standard practice for this so called Agriculture Min.

Ritz is to stupid to even realize how stupid he actually is..1400/1600 tests in 4 yrs for what..about 300,000+ slaughtered horses all of unknown origin, non regulated, non traceable beyond the auction & the killbuyer that signs off on the useless EID for horses they first laid eyes on hours or a few days prior to shipping to slaughter..Once again as far as residuals ..you won’t find something that you intentionally don’t look for…and CFIA really isn’t looking….

I live in the US and groups here have been fighting the shipping of US horses over both borders for years. The crooked US Senate are the very people that have blocked every bill introduced in congress that would have stopped this madness for the past 10 years. If there is a buck to be made these politicians in both countries the US and Canada both are just alike. What that fool said about Bute only being found in 3 samples and not enough to worry about is the same thing a fool politician in UK said about the few samples of horse meat where Bute was found in frozen dinners mixed with beef and horse meat in every big supermarket chain in the country. They are still finding it. Bute isn’t the only drug that horses are given there are at least two hundred that was on the list I read. These drugs have never been given to humans because they are used only on horses. As most people know Bute started out as drug given to humans to treat rheumatoid arthritis and gout in 1952. It was taken off the market because of fatal side effects of diseases such as aplastic anemia. No one knows what the vet drugs in that list could cause in humans especially children, because of their young age the illnesses could be mistaken for something more common. I have a good idea that there are thousands of cases of misdiagnosis of illnesses in all of the EU countries that still eat horse meat. But we will never know because of greedy politicians and governments on both sides of the border.

  5. This is about money. It always has been and people who have that are keeping the disgusting practice going.

  6. This man is not living in the real world, his head is in the clouds some place, none of the horses that were taken in at a horse slae and did not have a coggins were even asked if they had bute in the system at any time. Hie flat out lieing . The big bucks$$$ is what he and they are looking at not the is there meds in the horses system so they don’t give a crap about the peole who are eating it .

And do you think that Mr. Ritz and PM Harper are serving horsemeat to their families? Absolutely not. The only bright spot is that the PC’s may soon be a government of the past, and why? Just look at how they have handled the affairs of the elderly, health system, war veterans, and the safety of all meat including horse meat. The list just goes on and on the nitely news. The one thing that the majority of us in Canada know is DO NOT EAT HORSEMEAT-IT IS NOT SAFE!!! Soon the majority of Canadian voters can decide if we want a continuance of this “stupidity” to represent us and thus the overseeing of unsafe meat exports to our global buyers. How low can Canada sink with this type of government mentality?

99.9% of horses are treated with banned substances. 90,000 horses are killed in Canada each year. In four years 1600 of these are tested by the CFIA. Who are they kidding!!

  9. One can’t expect much from a failed ostrich farmer.

So typical of this Conservative government…always protecting the money interests instead of the welfare of people. The Conservative government has no compassion for the suffering of our war veterans, our elderly & our animals…nothing new out of the mouth of Ritz…same old….just a different pile.
