Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party, Sends Supportive Message re: Bill C-322

Elizabeth MayCHDC continues to receive support from politicians regarding Bill C-322.  Your letters,  emails,  and postcards are producing positive results!

Please see the attached email sent from Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada,  and MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands,  who writes to one of our supporters:

Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2014
Subject: RE: Support Bill C-322

“Thank you for your email regarding Bill C-322, An Act to amend the Health of Animals Act and the Meat Inspection Act (slaughter of horses for human consumption).  We support this bill and oppose the continued slaughter of horses in Canada, especially considering the drugs administered to the horses that are not in accordance with food safety regulations required for other animals in Canada.

While the United States moved ahead and banned in 2006 the slaughter of horses for food, it still is legal to ship horses outside the country to be killed for food, or export their meat. The Green Party of Canada supports establishing a Parliamentary Committee on Animal Welfare and from this we also are working to develop legislation updating Canada’s criminal code as it pertains to animal protection, moving crimes against animals from the property section and recognizing animals as sentient beings.

I greatly appreciate the opportunity to hear your perspective and support for Bill C-322 and I encourage you to continue drawing attention to this issue.”

Sincerely,

Elizabeth May, O.C., M.P.

Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands

Leader of the Green Party of Canada

Here in the US the Farm Bill that will be passed shortly already has a amendment in it that was passed by both House and the Senate that defunds any inspection of horse slaughter plants. If things go the way they are there will be no opening of any horse slaughter plants in the US. I’m hoping that Canada can get horse slaughter shut down all of North America will be out of the business of horse killing. That would leave Mexico as the only country where horses could be slaughtered if we can get the bills S.541 and H.R.1094 that would stop US horses being shipped out of the country to be killed. If all of this could be accomplished that would put Mexico out of the horse slaughtering business too because they would be lucky to afford to keep one horse slaughter plant open without US horses being sent there.

    Thank you Elizabeth May!

  7. Elizabeth May is very forward thinking. It will be a long fight to reclassify horses and all companion animals from property to sentient beings but that would be the optimal outcome. It seems inane that one even has to write this but it shows how long it takes governments in general to evolve. Thank you Elizabeth May for responding and supporting the end of horse slaughter in Canada. Hopefully the United States and Canada will cooperate in the future and put an end to this abominable practice and the pipeline that brings US horses into Canada for the purpose of slaughter and international shipment for the end purpose of slaughter. Thank you MP May!
