Horses and cars – a really good mix

MONTGOMERY, Ind. (AP) – Amish residents in southwestern Indiana are asking officials to change the rock on county roads to make it easier for their horses to travel and reduce the risk of injury.

Steven Stoll says the rock being used is too big for horses to trot on and that many are suffering hoof injuries that cause lameness. That can cost Amish residents their sole source of transportation.

  1. What a bunch of losers – again!

Its to bad the Amish won’t enter the 21st century instead of continually forcing their kids to be raised in a religion that will not use modern appliances and electricity. I don’t know much about the Amish but from some of the television documentaries a lot of the older kids have left the cult behind.

Its always the horses that bear the horrors….Amish are known for the inhumane treatment of working horses to near death then sending them to New Holland’s killer buyer slaughter auctions. Likewise the vast puppy mills Amish never show or pay any tax on. Why do they deserve the right to be untaxed? The government should investigate and prosecute to fullest extent of law!

    1. The government is fully aware of the lifestyle of the Amish!!

  4. I should also add they do not vaccinate their horses either.

  5. It makes no sense that anyone would ask for entire roads to be re-paved when they could put boots and splint boots on their horses. I guess it’s easier to just dump them at an auction.

  6. I’m sure the horse injuries have nothing to do with loading up a buggy with 10 people and driving down the road in the middle of the night either.

There was a time that shoulders of roads and highways were wide and sandy and could be easily used by horses. But it has been years and years since DOTs did things that way. The Amish are putting their horses and own lives in harms way, as the rock will cause lameness. There are boots as stated in above comment. But, on a whole, Amish treatment of their horses and dogs leaves room for lots of improvement,

  8. are the Amish paying taxes to help with the cost of road work? Maybe they should all get bikes and retire their horses.

      Agreed! Amen!

  9. The problem is not the roads. The problem is the Amish do their own farrier work and from what I have seen it is atrocious. There are protective boots they could use on their horses but refuse to.
