American politicians, animal welfare groups and horse lovers are expected to introduce a bill to the U.S. Congress this week that could, effectively, shut down horse slaughter plants in Canada.

Senator Mary Landrieu, a Democrat from Louisiana, a Republican congressman from Pennsylvania and a Democrat from Illinois, are expected to introduce federal legislation March 13 that will ban the killing of horses for human consumption and prohibit the transport of horses across the U.S. border for slaughter.

Because some American Kill Buyers might transport horses and other equines across the U.S. border into Canada and claim the horses/equines are being transported for other purposes (leather, riding horses, harness horses), it is absolutely vital that Canadian horse slaughterhouses be closed. That way, American Kill Buyers can’t bring American horses into Canada to be slaughtered if the slaughterhouses don’t exist in the first place. And, of course, we want to stop horses/equines from Canada being slaughtered. Just the same, this is an excellent American Federal Bill and I am confident that it will pass.

Yes, should this BIll pass (cross my fingers), they will have to step up border patrol, because the “scum” will try and shuffle horses across our border under false paperwork (transporting horses for rodeo, show, etc.). This would be the next thing we would have to watch carefully for.

With all the horsemeat scandals going on all over the world, this is the best time to put a stop to the sorry industry. PETA and Wayne Pacalle of the Humane Society of the United States are both against horse slaughter so with their combined support horse slaughter should soon come to an end.

Peta is endorsing hs in the US. You might want to contact them.

There should be no doubt in anyone,s mind that the banning of this BARBARIC industry lies with the 80+% of the U.S. PUBLIC who are opposed to this shamefull industry and their democratic govt. Unfortunately the MAJORITY of Canadian PUBLIC have been silenced by an unethical arrogant Prime Minister and his cronnies. When the Prime Minister sanctions and supports this BARBARIC industry with OUR tax money, knowing full well Canadians are demanding this atrocity be banned, it should be obvious they will not support any BILL that would impede the ongoing mass slaughter of these companion animals.
Sometimes i am ashamed to be Canadian, and this is one of those times.

    1. I am totally against the slaughter of horses for their meat…disgusting, evil practice that only the lowest of the lowest human beings support…this has been proven to be animal abuse and it is also proven that horses have too many drugs in their systems that are toxic to humans…Shame on Canada for supplying TOXIC horsemeat to European countries…also, horses are shipped out of Calgary, Alberta in airplanes so they can be slaughtered in China…Our Canadian governments have absolutely NO MORALS. This slaughter of horses to feed other countries is worth 83 Million to our government…that is nothing compared to the pain and suffering that these animals go through. SHAME ON CANADA FOR ALWAYS KILLING OFF ANY ANIMAL THAT THEY CAN MAKE MONEY ON.

I believe this bill will be introduced through energy and commerce not through agriculture.

Hope the bill doesn’t get stuck in the Senate committee again this time. Not hopeful at all for the House committee to come through. What can I say, the House is oppositional defiant. 😦
