Anti-slaughter advocates here in the US have been fighting to have bills passed stopping horses being shipped to Canada/Mexico for years to be killed. It is the Senate that will not help pass any bills. There are high paid lobbyists that wine and dine and donate large amounts of cash to these politicians for their reelection campaigns the money supplied by the Racing industry, Quarter Horse Assoc, and every other breeder that wants a easy way to dump their culls and worn out brood mares. These donations run into the thousands of dollars. Basically the crooks in the Senate are bought off and we can’t stop it. But what about the thousands of horses that are in the feed lots in Canada that are raised for slaughter?? There are farmers that are breeding horses for slaughter just like cattle. They seem to like the larger breeds because they bring in more money by the pound. Also the horses being shipped to Japan for slaughter?? Some of these horses weigh 2000 lbs. I know there are a lot of Canadians fighting horse slaughter but your fighting the same kind of crooks we have here. I don’t really have a answer for it. I’m hoping the new EU rules effective in the summer of 2013 will stop a lot of it but as I said I don’t have a clue.

Hey Canada why don’t you stop slaughtering American horses?

Hey GASafeHorses, why don’t you petition your government to stop sending horses to Canada to be slaughtered. Concerned Canadians are trying very hard to end horse slaughter but as long as Americans fill the pipe line with their unwanted horses, it makes it that much more difficult. And while you are at it, stop shipping them to Mexico too!!

Sixty-seven percent of the horses slaughtered in Canada are shipped in from the U.S. If those horses were not available there wouldn’t be sufficient numbers of horses in Canada to keep the 4 slaughter houses operating at a profit. With cattle prices rising, maybe some of the meat horse breeders will return to breeding cattle for meat instead of horses.
