We’d like to draw your attention to footage captured in July 2011 at Les Viandes de la Petite-Nation.  In the photographic evidence was a single EID for one horse, a mare.

This 10 year old mare appears to have been brought directly to the plant for slaughter by her callous owner, LF of Gatineau, Quebec.

The EID shows that LF had owned this mare from August 12, 2004 until July 7, 2011, when the animal was unceremoniously dumped at the plant.

LF, if you’re reading, know this.  We had to view the slaughter of 164 horses who were killed July 13^th & 14^th, 2011.   We can’t say for sure exactly which horse out of the nameless 164 who were brutally executed over the two days she was, but we have no doubt that we saw your faithful mare in her death throes.  We can only say to you, how heartless can you be?

From what we’ve read about you, you are a well-paid professional who could have chosen a kinder, more dignified end of life for her – yet you chose to get a few hundred pitiful bucks for her life.

Shame on you.

TOWN OF LISLE — Thirty horses on their way to a Canadian meat plant perished in a Monday night tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 81 in the Town of Lisle, according to state police.

 At around 8 p.m., driver Clarence J. Phelps, 56, of Watertown saw flames coming from the passenger side of the vehicle, police said. Phelps pulled to the shoulder just south of the Cortland County line and tried to extinguish the blaze, but was unsuccessful.

 By the time state police arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The Marathon Fire Department responded and put out the fire.

 Thirty horses, being transported from Shippensburg, Pa., to a rendering plant in Massueville, Quebec, died in the blaze.

 The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire started after a passenger side fuel tank malfunctioned.

 The New York State Department of Transportation and Broome County Sheriff’s Office also assisted the state police at the scene.

Wild horses along a road in the Penticton region

The province paid $73,000 to a Chilcotin First Nation for a moose-enhancement program that included rounding up 14 wild horses and selling them for meat at auction — even though research in the region suggests there is little competition between moose and horses for forage.

The money was also used to train aboriginals how to trap wolves, to conduct a survey of moose kills by native hunters, and to decommission logging roads in an effort to reduce vehicle access for hunting.

 Kristen Johnny, spokeswoman for the Tl’etinqox First Nation at Alexis Creek, said the moose-enhancement program ran from October 2012 to March 2013 and that band members rounded up 14 wild horses and herded them into a specially built corral.

 “They compete for the same grazing,” she said. “There’s a lot of horses out there. They were then taken to the auction in Williams Lake.”

Alberta’s surging wild horse population has ranchers pushing the province to lift the temporary suspension of its selective slaughter program.

The latest count shows a 25 per cent year-over-year increase in the animals since public outcry halted the annual cull last year.

“It’s concerning,” said Sundre-area cattle rancher Jim Bowhay, who fears feral horses will overrun neighbouring pastures and invade his rangeland.

Bowhay already estimates paying up to $30,000 a year in extra costs related to wildlife grazing on grass intended for his livestock.

“Give it two or three years,” Bowhay said. “They grow in a hurry.

“That’s our livelihood, it ups our cost of production — it makes it tough.”
