Ground Manners: A Novel celebrates first anniversary
Ground Manners. A Novel was published 13 months ago. One of the traditional publishers I’d sent it to wrote back saying that it was too political. At least half a dozen advocacy organizations said they would publicize it on their sites; they didn’t, and the only Canadian organizations that did were the CHDC and CHHAPS. Since then, Carol M. Upton of Dreams Aloud Promotions (see blog) has had reviews published in six horse magazines for which I am very grateful.

Prominent U.S.author, P.J. O’Dwyer, has penned her latest book Relentless which deals with the dark world of slaughter inMexico and the first book in the Fallon Sisters Trilogy.
The following is a review by Sinikka Crosland, Executive Vice-President and Director of the CHDC:
“Fans of romantic suspense and horse lovers alike will be captivated by RELENTLESS. Sizzling with passion and taut with intrigue, this novel is a rollercoaster ride that propels the reader from a horse rescue farm in Clear Spring, Maryland, where a murder has occurred and danger continues to lurk, to a Mexican slaughterhouse and an encounter with a deadly drug cartel. Author P. J. O’Dwyer expertly captures the flavor of rural America as well as the ruthlessness of a Mexican border town, even as she exposes the cruel and predatory nature of the horse slaughter industry.”
Headstrong, fearless, beautiful and widowed Bren Ryan does not feel ready to accept the advances of a handsome, alluring stranger who has moved in next door. She has poured heart and soul into raising her two fatherless sons and into managing her horse rescue farm. But, in the midst of attempting to discover the truth behind her husband’s sudden and mysterious death, she is plunged into a shadowy maze of events that give rise to real concerns abut her own and her family’s safety.
RELENTLESS is a must-read for those looking for an edge-of-the-seat thrill ride that pulses with romance. The novel also provides an inside view of the dark world of kill buyers and trafficking horses for profit.”

While we do not advocate racing as being a good thing for horses due to the over-breeding and the sheer numbers sent to slaughter when their “productive” years are over, we would like to let you know about a book recently published that speaks about cheating by drug use in horse racing.
Most race horses, despite strict regulations prohibiting it, are given illegal drugs on race day. Many of these are performance enhancement drugs that affect not only the race, but the thousands of dollars at stake. Glenn Thompson, a race horse trainer with over 30 years of experience, reveals the darkest secrets behind the scenes of the Sport of Kings. By shining a light on these secrets, he hopes to change the pattern and return decency and honor to horse racing. Learn how over 85% of thoroughbred trainers give illegal drugs and how top racing officials turn a blind eye. Learn how jockeys are seriously injured and the champion horse George Washington was put down when safety protocols were not followed. The secrets behind the tradition of cheating will both shock and amaze you.

“WIND, The Story of a Wild Horse Rescue
Horses are no longer a necessity for work or transportation as they were in the days of the Wild West. Unwanted horses are often abused, abandoned, or worse. A new book by illustrator Denise Brown takes on these controversial practices. Wind, Wild Horse Rescue is an adventure about the plight of America’s wild mustangs and the fight to prevent from being eliminated on public lands.
Wind focuses on the handling and management of the wild herds. The book also takes on the inhumanity of the slaughterhouse and the debate over what to do with wild horses. It also reveals many of the challenges faced by wild horses through the eyes, ears, and senses of a young colt named “Wind”. Wind is chased by a helicopter and captured during a round-up. The names here are fictitious, but the events are real.
The author hopes the world will realize wild mustangs should be treated humanely and should be allowed to live on the public lands that have been set aside for them. Working together, Brown says, informed Americans can
ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy these beautiful creatures — and not just in the movies.
Author and illustrator Denise F. Brown grew up next to several horse farms. Her love for horses and animals, and her talent as an equine artist, gave her the courage to write and illustrate this book. Wind has over 100 beautiful equine sketches and paintings.
