Up to 300 horses are being slaughtered inIrelandevery week in order to feed a growing appetite for their meat acrossEurope, according to reports.

In recent times, the slaughtering of horses has become more popular due to the economic downfall, particularly acrossEurope.

Due to the effects of the recession inIreland, the cost of rearing thoroughbreds became unaffordable for many horse owners, and many have had to give up their horses for slaughter.Irelandwhich was once known as a “horse country, ” and is famous for its thoroughbred racehorses, now has six horse meat processing plants across the country.

Pat Hayes of Ossary Meats in Co Offaly recently told the Irish Daily Mail, “There is quite a considerable market right across the EU. The standard is very high and if they meet these standards you have the customers.”

Apparently there are 200 horses slaughtered a day in Alberta, some of them sent from the Calgary Stampede farm, young healthy horses that don’t care to learn to buck. Who would. The rednecks in Alberta don’t care about the horses at all. They just want them to perform for them. This is supposed to be the greatest show on earth? I have to live here in Alberta but I can hardly stand it anymore. It’s the most self-centred place in the world. Horses are just things to almost everyone here.

This is just SO wrong :(

What is so sad is that you will see numerous commercials on tv featuring horses, usually running as they are so beautiful to watch….when was the last time you saw cows featured in an tv ad….and yet, we slaughter them for food.

I hate to say this but we can only hope that eventually when enough people get ill from eating horse meat which is tainted with chemicals, and it is regardless of what the CFIA will tell you, that our government will stop and re asses this issue. So, we need to keep the pressure on and get signed petitions sent in to help get Bill C-322 passed.

    • Teresa Heaney says:

How do you sign the petition regarding Bill C- 322?

      • Marie Dean says:

Go to the CHDC Website http://www.defendhorsescanada.org Help Now! Do It Now – Here is the English Petition: http://www.defendhorsescanada.org/petition_oct_2011.pdf. You will find a French Petition as well. Please note that only original handwritten petitions are admissible to the Canadian government. Online petitions are not allowed under Parliamentary rules. Please note that to make this petition be counted in parliament that each name must be accompanied by a full address, postal code and most importantly a signature, and the paperwork must not be defaced in anyway. A petition needs 25 signatures or more to be counted in parliament. Good Luck! Mailing address is provided on the bottom of the petition. Thank You!

Much more needs to be said and done about the fact that the horses are slaughtered using a bolt gun. It just doesn’t work for horses. The videos showing horses taking so many shots before they start to die are proof that the bolt gun doesn’t work. People think the horses are slaughtered humanely but they’re not. There needs to be an outcry about the methods used to kill the horses. I don’t want any of the horses slaughtered but at least let’s all speak up and try to stop the use of the bolt gun. How do we go about doing this? Does anyone have any suggestions so this practice can stop?

This is just an ever ending horror story. It is hard to change cruel people. An animal is animal to them, so they don’t care. We just need to stop this one country at a time. Does anybody know of another country besides the States that has no slaughter?

  5. Mary-Joe Figueira says:

I agree. Oh yes. It also happens in England, Italy and France. The French and Italians eat horse meat. Quebecers are big horse meat eaters. Japan I believe eats horse and China breeds small dogs for eating. It is very heartbreaking. I guess because of the downturn there, horses are first to go. I do believe that there are breeders who breed specifically for slaughter. I can’t imagine there being 300 a week and here 1000 a week if it wasn’t for that. I am not sure if this issue is going to go away that easily. It is also disconcerting to know we are knocking against brick walls especially where politicians are concerned.

    • andalvin1962 says:

It appears Bouvry Exports in Calgary, Alberta are purpose breeding drafts for slaughter as well as for live shipping to Japan for slaughter.

    • Sammy says:

I unerstand your comment there. I agree, but just wanted to mention that NOT all Quebecers eat H-Meat. And if some do, like many others, they either deny the facts of the drugs surrounding this meat or simply don,t give a s#@!
      Tks!

      • Mary-Joe Figueira says:

My thoughts exactly. I have been thinking about the same thing. It is only going to take one. I don’t understand what the CFIA is thinking.

      • Mary-Joe Figueira says:

You are 100% correct. I meant that of all Canadians, it is people in Quebec that will eat horse meat, more so than other parts of Canada. – My apologies.
